跟谣传的一样，在当地时间2009年8月18日的德国科隆游戏展GamesCom上，SONY在其基调演讲上公布新改进型号的Slim版PS3 CECH-2000A (本体颜色木炭黑Charcoal Black)！

相比老型号，Slim版PS3在体积上减少33%，重量减少36%，耗电量减少34%，搭载120GB的2.5” Serial ATA硬盘一块！
PS3 Slim是在主半导体以及从电源供给到冷却系统都重新再设计，同时使用45nm制程的Cell处理器，与现在老型号采用的60nm相比速度相同，但更加小型以及省电，同时也降低的噪音！
从2009年9月1日开始，分别在北美、欧洲、亚洲、日本(9月3日)发售，价格分别为299美元、299欧元、29980日元(含税)！
同时，老型号80GB版PS3将降价到299美元和299欧元，160GB版PS3降价到399美元！
